Port Jeff is primly located directly in the middle and North Shore, of Long Island; half way between New York City and Montauk / “the Hamptons”. Port Jeff is a qu
aint little village with a population of 7,837 (2000 Census) and a median annual household income of $95,300 (2000 Suffolk County Planning Board). Port Jeff has two hospitals allowing for an abundance of doctors, surgeons, etc to live in the town. While Port Jeff is a small community, there really is never a moment where you can’t find something to do.
Port Jefferson is known as tourist town, attracting thousands of visitors a year via the three Port Jefferson- Bridgeport ferries leaving right from Port Jeff’s own harbor and bringing in even more people on the Long Island Rail Road, spanning the entire island-Montauk to New York. Port Jeff has two hospitals, multiple beaches and countless docks to
wreak havoc on.
The town was once a major whaling port, especially in the 1880s leaving behind a historical appeal to visitors.
The annual Dickens Festival is a major attraction, considering Port Jefferson is a historically Victorian town. People dress in 19th
century clothing and re-enact the Victorian era. Generous homeowners hold house tours of their historic homes. There are also caroling, vendors, the reading of winter-related poetry, street performers, music, good food, and dancing. As well as this festival, in the summer many smaller ones are held showcasing music, crafts, and pride (Greek and Irish festivals, for example).
Other cool tid-bits include the Jaws series being filmed on Long Island (and yes, the fear of Great White attacks are very real!) and the Amityville Horror house is just a short drive away, a pretty fun place to take visiting friends for shock value. Jones Beach state park and concert stadium are also close by, being one of the most incredible places to see a concert at. The stadium is located directly on the water, if your show starts early you can see the sunset over the ocean while listening to your favorite music.
Marty Tankleff, accused of murdering his parents as a senior at Port Jefferson High School, is the town celebrity after being released after 17 years of wrongful conviction. Many national shows such as Oprah have covered Tankleff’s case and Port Jeff has become mildly famous because of it.
Recently 50 Cent and Tony YaYo bought a home the town over and occasionally throw parties allowing anyone 18+ to enter. You can frequently see them driving down the Long Island Expressway in their pimped-out Escalades or enjoying dinner at one of the many fantastic eateries Port Jeff has to offer.
Long Island is called “the bubble.” Everything and anything you need is right on the Island making it one of the best places to live. It is really fantastic to be completely surrounded by beaches and the only way off the island being to drive west to the city or go north via a ferry. It is like living in your own little fantasy world of 7,559,372 people.
